Genotyping of human papillomavirus in female cervix and vulva

Abstract
ObjectiveTo compare the prevalence and genotype distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) in female cervix and vulva.
MethodsGene chip technique was applied to detect HPV and determine HPV genotypes in 251 female patients with cervical and vulvar exfoliated cell samples. Chi-square test using SPSS was used to analyze the differences between the two sites.
ResultsOut of the 251 patients, 121 (48.21%) had the same HPV test result in the cervix and vulva, and 130 patients (51.79%) had different test result . Among them, the cases who were HPV-positive in the cervical and vulvar region were 128 and 149, and the positive detection rates were 51.00% and 59.36%. In addition, the prevalence rates of HPV and high-risk HPV were significantly higher in vulva than cervix (262 vs. 206, 199 vs.154, all P<0.05). While the prevalence rates of low-risk HPV was not significantly higher in vulva than cervix (63 vs. 52, P=0.765). All the 21 HPV genotypes were detected in both regions. The most common low-risk types were type 6 and type 81, while the top four genotypes of high-risk were 16, 52, 51 and 58. The infection rates of two or more HPV genotypes were significantly higher in vulva than cervix (21.52% vs. 29.88%, P=0.032).
ConclusionsDue to the close correlation between the cervix and vulva in anatomy and the high HPV detection rate in the vulva, it is suggested that in clinical work, we should not only pay attention to the HPV infection of the cervix, but also pay more attention to the vulva.
