Influences of reading therapy on the improvement of empathy and communication skills of nurses in cancer hospitals

Abstract
ObjectiveTo discuss the influences of reading therapy on empathy and communication skills of nurses in cancer hospital.
MethodsFrom January 2016 to January 2017, a total of 60 nurses were recruited voluntarily in 3 phases to participate in reading therapy training, and there were 16 times of training in each course. Before and after training, Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals and Nurses' Clinical Communication Competency Scale were used to evaluate the nurses' empathy and communication skills and compare the effects of reading therapy.
ResultsAfter the training, the total score of nurses' empathy increased from (110.43±13.53) to (118.68±11.93) , the score of nurses' clinical communication competency increased from (3.81±0.37) to (4.09±0.38) . The differences were statistically significant (t=-3.54, -3.60; P<0.05) .
ConclusionsReading therapy can improve the level of empathy and communication skills of nurses in cancer hospitals and promote the harmony of nurses and patients.
