Abstract
Objective To establish a geographic information system for the plague prevention and control,to discuss the spatial distribution features and epidemic trend of human plague in Qinghai Province, and to provide a basis for formulating prevention and control measures. Methods A geographic information system for Qinghai plague prevention and control was used to establish a database for Qinghai Province's human plague cases from 1958 to 2009 and then epidemiology datas of human plague cases were retrieved and space mapping for plague cases' spatial distribution was done, and epidemic characteristics of human plague in Qinghai Province over the years were analyzed. Results From 1958-2009,there were human plague outbreak every year except 7 years (1972,1984,1999,2000,2002,2007 and 2008) in Qinghai Province; human plague outbreak areas mainly located in Huangnan,Guoluo,Yushu,Haixi,Haibei,Hainan Prefecture and Xining City and 26 counties (cities) of Haidong Region; there were 197 human plague outbreak cases,464 cases of morbidity,239 cases of death, and the fatality rate was 51.51%(239/464).Conclusion The Geographic information systems has visually displayed the epidemic distribution characteristics of human plague in Qinghai Province over the years, highlighted high-risk regions and epidemic trend of plague in the form of legends, and provided a scientific basis for administrative health departments on decision making.
