Abstract
Objective To analyze quantitatively the articles of schistosomiasis control strategy since the founding of the People's Republic of China using bibliometric method, and to systematically describe the process of development and evolution of schistosomiasis prevention and control strategies thus to sum up experience and lessons, and to provide a scientific basis for the formation of appropriate policy. Methods Retrieving articles about schistosomiasis prevention and control in CNKI,reading highly cited articles; according to the contents of the articles, the process of schistosomiasis prevention and control in China could be divided into different stages. The articles of different stages were analyzed using bibliometric method, with particular emphasis on summarizing and analyzing the emergence of new methods in each stage, and their impacts on prevention and control strategies. Results By analyzing literature of high citation frequency on the schistosomiasis control strategies,we concluded that there were three major stages on schistosomiasis control in our country. The strategy in the first phase(1950-1978) was focused primarily on the research on anti-schistosomiasis medicine, ecology distribution of snails and methods and drugs for snail control. The strategy in the second phase (1979-2003) was focused primarily on the research on schistosomiasis control strategies, epidemic factors and law of schistosomiasis, the role of cattle and pigs on schistosomiasis transmission, and expanding chemotherapy using praziquantel to control schistosomiasis. The strategy in the third phase (2004-2013) was focused primarily on schistosomiasis surveillance, status of schistosomiasis control and the changes of control strategies, the effects of schistosomiasis control by synthetic measures with emphasis on infection source control in the field. Conclusion The emergence of new methods plays a leading role on the formation of prevention and treatment strategies, and promotes the development of schistosomiasis control in China, meanwhile the economic development of China provides a reliable guarantee for the interruption even elimination of schistosomiasis in the next step.
