Investigation on AIDS knowledge and HIV/syphilis infection rates among college students in Shenzhen

Abstract
ObjectiveTo explore the awareness of AIDS knowledge and HIV/syphilis infections among college students in Shenzhen.
MethodsThe HIV/AIDS related knowledge of 3 577 students from three colleges in Shenzhen was collected by questionnaire. The HIV and syphilis were detected according to fingertip blood collection.
ResultsThe awareness rate of AIDS knowledge among college students in Shenzhen was 88.62%. The awareness rate of male college students was 92.09%, which was higher than female college students; the awareness rate of medical students was 93.64%, which was higher than non-medical students. The differences were both statistically significant (χ2=43.470 and 6.799, P both<0.01) . The positive rates of HIV antibody and syphilis antibody were 0.17% and 0.06% respectively.
ConclusionsThe awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge among college students is low. HIV and syphilis have spread in this group.
