Distribution of carbapenem antibiotic resistance genes in intestinal environment of inpatients

Abstract
ObjectiveTo analyze the distribution of carbapenem antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in intestinal environment of the patients in one hospital in Hangzhou.
MethodsForty stool specimens were collected from patients between 31-92 years old. Genome DNA was extracted to detect AGRs by PCR. The similarities and phylogenetic relationships of the ARGs were analyzed by bioinformatics software.
ResultsThe ARGs were detected from 19 stool specimens with the positive rate of 47.5% (19/40) . Seven positive specimens were collected from patients treated with antibiotics and 12 specimens from patients without the antibiotic utilization. The detected ARGs included blaNDM, blaVIM, blaIMP, blaOXA and blaKPC, and some of which coexisted in the same patient. The blaVIM gene was detected in 3 samples from the same ward. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that these samples were distantly related.
ConclusionsThe positive rate of ARGs detected from the hospital is high and is not obviously related with antibiotic utilization in patients. ARGs have small possibility for spreading in the same ward by horizontal transfer. It is necessary to strengthen the survey of the ARGs in patients and the control of nosocomial infections.
