Abstract
ObjectiveTo understand the influenza vaccination status and influencing factors among the elderly aged 60 years and above in Chengguan District of Lhasa Prefecture, so as to provide evidence for improving the vaccination rate.
MethodsA total of 420 elder people aged 60 and above in Chengguan District of Lhasa were selected by three-stage random sampling in September 2018. The vaccination status during 2017 and 2018 was obtained by face to face interview based on the standard questionnaire. Influencing factors of influenza vaccination were determined by multi-variable Logistic regression analysis.
ResultsThere were 414 respondents to the survey with the response rate of 98.57%. The influenza vaccination rate in these people was 56.76% (235/414) . The main reasons for vaccination were "medical staff recommendation" (66.81%, 157/235) and "family or friends recommendation" (62.98%, 148/235) . The main reasons for non-vaccination were "do not know the free vaccination policy" (33.52%, 60/179) and "vaccination contraindications" (25.70%, 46/179) . The elderly in age groups of 60-64[OR (95%CI) =3.53 (1.94-6.41) ] and 65-69 [OR (95%CI) = 3.42 (1.95-5.99) ] were more likely to vaccinate influenza vaccine than those in age group of 70 and above. The elder people with occupation were less likely to vaccinate influenza vaccine than farmers[OR (95%CI) =0.31 (0.16-0.60) ]. People knowing the free vaccination policy could improve the influenza vaccination compared with those having no knowledge of the policy [OR (95%CI) = 4.04 (2.35-6.95) ].
ConclusionsThe vaccination rate of influenza among the elderly aged 60 years and over in Chengguan District of Lhasa Prefecture was relatively low in 2017-2018. Farmers, the low age group and people knowing the free vaccination policy of influenza vaccination are the factors which can promote the influenza vaccination. Strengthening health education among the elderly, especially groups of 70 years old and above, illiteracy and with chronic diseases, as well as improving recommendation rate of influenza vaccine in medical staff can increase the vaccination rate of influenza vaccine among the elderly in this region.
