A qualitative study on living quality of patients with rectal carcinoma and permanent colostomy

Abstract
ObjectiveTo understand the patients′ subjective evaluation of the quality of life, who are suffering from carcinoma and have been operated with permanent colostomy, and analyze relative influencing factors to provide an evidence for improving their quality of life.
MethodsAccording to phenomenological research method of qualitative research to choose purposive sampling, twelve patients had been underwent semi-structured interviews.We used Colaizzi′s seven-step analysis methods to analyze the data, inductive and refine the theme.
ResultsThere were 7 points which might affect the quality of patients′ life including negative emotion, effects of daily life, persecution of complications, sexual dysfunction, degradation of social roles, lack of relevant knowledge of disease and economic pressures.
ConclusionsWe should pay much more attention on patients′ emotion reaction, provide psychological support and more stoma-related information, and take full advantage of enterostomal therapist and call on improving the medical security system by government in order to enhance patients′ quality of life.
