Effects of exercise on islet β cell function

Abstract
Islet β cell dysfunction is a hallmark characteristic of diabetes mellitus (DM) and uncovering key ways to prevent this dysfunction is critical for the prevention of DM. Evidence suggests that scientific and rational exercise regimen can improve systemic insulin resistance. Moreover, exercise regimen has been shown to preserve β cell function, potentially by improving glucose and lipid homeostasis, thereby allowing individuals with DM to achieve optimum blood glucose levels. Therefore, as a simple and economical intervention, exercise can be a great tool to prevent DM.
