Abstract
European Respiratory Society guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of chronic cough in adults and children was issued on European Respiratory Journal in January 2020.The highlights of this guidelines were summarizes in this paper. The guidelines provided evidence-based recommendations for eight important questions about diagnosis and therapy of chronic cough.Increased cough hypersensitivity was found in different phenotypes of cough.Diagnosis and treatment procedures for adults and children were recommended separately. The importance of sequential trial treatment was emphasized for different cough phenotypes.Classic asthma, cough variant asthma and eosinophilic bronchitis were classified as asthmatic cough.Asthma should be diagnosed or excluded according to the treatments responses to anti-asthmatic drugs. The importance on bronchial provocation test and induced sputum eosinophils counting were no longer emphasized in the diagnosis of asthmatic cough.Diagnostic value and cut-off value of fractional exhaled nitric oxide and blood eosinophils counting are still need to be validated.
