Abstract
ObjectiveTo compare the clinical efficacy of cold light whitening in the treatment of aging discolored teeth and dental fluorosis.
MethodsA total of 118 patients with stained teeth treated in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from June 2017 to September 2020 were selected as the research objects. According to the types of stained teeth, they were divided into three groups: aging discolored teeth group (51 cases), mild to moderate dental fluorosis group (46 cases), and severe dental fluorosis group (21 cases). All patients in the three groups were treated by cold light whitening. The 16 color Vita color plate was used to compare the color before and immediately after treatment. And the improvement value of patients’ color scale was calculated. Visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the sensitivity immediately after treatment. The VAS score and sensitivity were recorded and compared among groups.
ResultsAfter cold light whitening treatment, the color of teeth in aging discolored teeth group increased by 7.22±2.59, which increased by 8.33±2.82 in mild to moderate dental fluorosis group, and 4.81±3.25 in severe dental fluorosis group. There was a significant difference in the improvement of tooth color scale among the three groups (P<0.05). The therapeutic effects of mild to moderate dental fluorosis group and aging discolored teeth group were significantly better than that of severe dental fluorosis group (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in VAS score or sensitivity among the three groups (P>0.05).
ConclusionsCold light whitening can improve aging discolored teeth, mild to moderate fluorosis teeth, and severe fluorosis teeth in varying degrees. Among them, the effects on aging discolored teeth and mild to moderate fluorosis teeth are better than those of severe fluorosis teeth. Most of the patients have less postoperative sensitivity.
