Abstract
ObjectiveTo investigate the influencing factors and medical treatment situation of middle-aged and elderly women with urinary incontinence.
MethodsFrom June 2018 to September 2019, 619 women aged 45-94 years old were selected from three hospitals and communities in Chaoshan area by means of convenience sampling for questionnaire survey. Their general information, cognitive status on urinary incontinence, medical treatment status, influencing factors, etc. were investigated.
ResultsMore than half of the patients with urinary incontinence were patients with stress incontinence (SUI), accounting for 68.6% (269/392), 72.5% (284/392) of the patients believed that urinary incontinence was a normal aging phenomenon. The overall medical treatment rate of patients with urinary incontinence was 28.8% (113/392), and there was a statistically significant difference in the medical treatment rates of patients with different types of urinary incontinence (P<0.05), among whom the medical treatment rate of patients with stress urinary incontinence was the lowest. There was a statistically significant difference in the medical treatment rate of patients with different degrees of urinary incontinence (P<0.05), among whom the medical treatment rate of patients with mild urinary incontinence was the lowest. There was a statistically significant difference in the medical treatment rate of patients from different areas, among whom the medical treatment rate of the patients from rural area was the lowest. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that the influencing factors of medical treatment situation of urinary incontinence were degree of education, living alone, place of residence, knowledge of urinary incontinence, severity of urinary incontinence, sense of shame, and publicity of urinary incontinence.
ConclusionsMiddle-aged and elderly female patients with urinary incontinence have low awareness of urinary incontinence and a low rate of medical treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out publicity and education on factors related to urinary incontinence to improve the social attention to the disease.
