Abstract
Objective To evaluate the clinical results of proximal row carpectomy after a minimum of 3 year follow up. Methods Nineteen cases treated in our center from 1992 to 2004 with proximal row carpectomy who had at least 3 year follow up were reviewed (follow up period ranging from 3 to 10 years, with an average of 6.7 years). Images of the wrists were reviewed, and grip strength and range of motion were measured. Results Of the 19 cases, 16 had no pain at postoperative follow up while 3 had mild pain. Degenerative changes of the wrist were noted postoperatively in 8 cases as shown by X-rays. The range of motion of the wrist was (72 ± 17)° fiexion-extension and (39 + 11)° radio-ulnar deviation, which were 63% and 45% of the contralateral wrist respectively. The grip strength after the surgery was (20+ 11 ) kg on average, which was 77% of the contralateral side. Conclusion Proximal row carpectomy has a steady clinical result at nil&term follow up.
