Nursing undergraduate interns' perception on theory-practice gap: a qualitative study

Abstract
ObjectiveTo understand the perception and attitude of nursing undergraduate interns to the difference between theoretical teaching and clinical practice nursing operation, so as to provide reference for scientific teaching reform.
MethodsData were collected from nursing undergraduate interns of a university in Changchun using an online survey tool comprising of a set of open-ended questions that asked for free text responses.Thematic analysis was used for data analysis.
ResultsFive themes regarding differences were extracted, including penetration of tacit nursing knowledge, difference of content, change of thinking and concept, contradiction between efficiency and standard, and improvement of skill training effect.
ConclusionsDifferences between theoretical teaching and clinical practice come from many aspects, and students' understanding of the differences is different among individuals.Nursing educators should arrange more clinical practice opportunities for students and pay attention to the cultivation of critical thinking ability.
