Abstract
As a kind of pluripotent stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells have the ability of self-renewal and multipotential differentiation. As a kind of micro organ rich in stem cells, hair follicle mesenchymal stem cells (HF-MSCs) derived from hair follicles have attracted more and more attentions because they are easy to obtain, free from age and ethical restrictions. Dermal papilla (DP) and dermal sheath (DS) are the mesenchymal niches of hair follicles and contain a variety of stem cells. In this paper, we review the previous literature on stem cells in DP and DS, and summarize the concept, characteristics and functions of HF-MSCs.
