Abstract
Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1), a heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta subunit, is induced by hypoxia and expressed in a variety of cells. The alpha subunit of HIF-1 is the active one, which plays a key role in response of cells to hypoxia. Current studies have shown that pathology and physiology of myocardial metabolism, myocardial protection, angiogenesis, and atherosclerosis are all implicated with HIF-1ɑ. These lead to the suggestion that HIF-1ɑ can be a target for effective myocardial protection therapy. Meanwhile, our previous studies have indicated that expression of HIF-1ɑ is up-regulated in the early stage of acute myocardial infarction, implying that HIF-1ɑ can be a potential cardiac marker and serves as an auxiliary index of the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction.
